Character(s): Anthony Goldstein.
Rating: G
Setting: Prologue, life before Hogwarts. Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
Info: Character development narrative.

Ever since the day he's born Anthony is lively as his mum puts it. As soon as he learns to walk he's all over the place, exploring the house and grabbing everything his little hands can reach, eager to see more, hear more, learn more. And the endless questions! Constantly wanting to know what's this, what's that, how does this work and how built what. Leah does her best to keep up with her son, always providing answers, toys and new games to keep the little boy busy. Dad doesn't understand, however. He's the Muggle of the family, a quiet man who enjoys his job as a banker. He tries to get the boy to slow down, to learn how to become a useful member of the society and how to keep his head down.

Anthony loves them both very much but always feels like he'd have to prove himself to dad. He tries to sit up straight at the dinner table, to stop fidgeting and talking. Constantly talking, until his food is cold and he's the last one at the table. Behind dad's back mum takes away Anthony's plate, smiling at the son she loves. And so once again Anthony's dinner is nothing more than dessert that's enjoyed behind his dad's back.

The boy grows tall and enters primary school. After the first day Anthony's already made friends and managed to get himself in trouble by just being himself. Maybe it's drumming his fingers on the desk, tapping his foot or just simply humming loud enough to bother others during class. Whatever it is, the teachers still like him. They send notes to parents with him and he gives the crumpled papers to mum while dad's watching the telly. Mum smiles, asks him to tone it down just a bit and that's it. While tucking him in at night she tells him to be who he is, to hold his head high and not let anyone get him down. She kisses his forehead and tells him she'll always love him, no matter what. He wants to be like his mum so bad. To be as accepting, positive and loyal as she is. He observes her every move, doing his best to become more and more like her with each passing day.

School is wonderful. Anthony loves to learn new things and he soaks up every bit of information that he can while making friends with almost everyone he runs into. He stands up against bullies and protects the weaker children with all his might. One day he comes home with a black eye and yet another note from the teachers. Dad is furious, but mum hugs Anthony tight, telling him she's proud of him.

This is when mum starts telling him about Hogwarts, magic and Anthony's heritage. As his 11th birthday draws near, he spends hours sitting in front of the window, just waiting. Trying to catch a glimpse of an owl but seeing nothing. Each night he goes to bed disappointed, a tiny voice in the back of his head saying the letter might never come. Shut up shut up shut up, he tells the voice with tears in his eyes. He falls asleep and dreams of Hogwarts and the adventures that wait for him there.

And then, on the morning of his birthday a thump wakes him up. Then a scratch and the hoot of an owl. It takes him only a few seconds to jump up from his bed and run to the window, where a brown owl is waiting. It's holding a letter. A letter with his name on it. "Mum!" he yells and opens the window.
